It is a useful exercise to take a good look at ourselves now and again – just to make sure we are on the right track, or at least heading in the right direction. On the ‘right track’ suggests that we have goals and having goals suggest we are following a plan of some sort.
It was my plan as a young girl leaving school to go to university to study English, but for reasons beyond my control, it became clear that this was not an option open to me and I had to get a job. So I decided to train as a nurse, whilst re-thinking my future and formulating another plan.
As it turned out nursing wasn’t the stopgap I had anticipated, but turned into a challenging and rewarding career of which I loved every interesting minute!
Throughout my working life I have set myself goals, whether it be changing my nursing speciality, passing exams, learning a new language, getting married, starting a family etc.
It wasn’t until my teenage son went to boarding school a couple of years ago, that I found myself with some ‘my time’ on my hands and started to think about my future possibilities – an alternative plan!
I had spent years looking after others, be it family or work and now was the time to start looking after me. So I had a good long look at my self and decided to make a few changes. I discovered, most importantly, that I like who I am (what’s not to like??!!)
But I wanted to be more independent, to be my own boss, to start my own business and have a new career. I wanted to learn to use a computer and to be a bit more modern in my outlook.
So I retrained as a Personal Image consultant, et voila, here I am today with my own business, a list of amazing clients and loving every minute of it!
I’m continuing to make plans and setting myself new goals – I won’t bore you with the list, but here are a few examples: –
- To learn Yoga and Pilates
- To make my website more interesting and interactive
- And to start writing a blog
Don’t you just love it when a plan starts to come together!!
