S/S 12 – The Key Trends

On a lovely day like today it’s easy to imagine the heat of the summer sun and the need to dress in light layers and glorious colours.  A good day, therefore, to talk to you about the key trends for this season. As the season progresses I will give you tips on how you can interpret and shop for the latest looks in your own high street, but for now let us enjoy the spectacles of the catwalk shows with all their quirky extremes and creative combinations. There are so many trends and micro trends to choose from that I have chosen a few of my favourites to write about today.

White on white

The all white trend could be split in half.  On one side we have crisp, clean shapes with razor sharp tailoring and clinical lines.  Sharp shirt dresses came clean at Celine and Jil Sander, while I found short futuristic dresses at Stella McCartney and edgy tailored peplum jackets at Givenchy. Fabrics with form and body were at large with crisp starched cottons leading the way.

On the other side we have the ultra feminine whites peppered with broderie anglaise, organzas, chiffons  and amazing reams of lace.  Louis Vuitton and Giambattista Valli maxed out on big scale lace and broderie anglaise, while Preen and Marni had a more modern but equally girlish edge.

Pretty Ice-cream pastels

And ice-cream colours they are.  Pastels dominated so many of the collections, conjuring up images of custard creams, parma violets and sugared almonds.  Tea Rose, spearmint and lemon sorbet, the paler the better and combine them as you will.  Christian Dior had full-length confections in the palest mint and nude, while Paul Smith and Givenchy offered cigarette trousers and silk shirts in the lightest blush.  Prada and Jonathan Saunders managed to mix up the colours offering a neopolitan style mix of super soft tones.

Gatsby Girls

With the re-shooting of F Scott Fitzgeralds classic “The Great Gatsby” and the success of “The Artist”, is it any wonder that the fabulous glamour of the 20’s is such a hit.  Bugle beads, tassle trims, drop waists, wide leg trousers and sparkle, sparkle, sparkle are key elements that can bring out the modern day Daisy Buchanan in you.  Gucci, Etro, Marchesa and Ralph Lauren owned these looks on the catwalk.

Sport Revolution

For me this resonated strongly with the early 90’s when styles were clean and edgy.  With the Olympics at the forefront of our imaginations it’s a great look to rock.  Only this time think luxury fabrics – so no sweating please! Both Stella McCartney and Versus showed dresses fit for Anna Kornukova while Victoria Beckham offered more glamorous post-fitness shapes showing athletic shoulders to their best advantage and futuristic cocoon jackets.  Look out for great performance fabrics, but don’t expect to need them for their technical properties…

Techno Prints

Each year we see a plethora of glorious prints and this year is no exception.  We joke about “florals” each summer – how can you have a summer without them? But how they are interpreted each year is what is important.  This year many of the florals are photographic as at Mary Katrantzou, the techno print darling of the fashion world.  Paisleys at Jonathan Saunders, patchwork prints at Miu Miu and retro Americana images at Prada make the summer a gloriously colourful event.  Colours are strong, bold and often clashing, so just be brave and wear it all at the same time.

This is just the beginning of the new season and it’s looking good.  The shops are, at last, shedding the vast rails of winter sales stock and we are starting to see the summer shaping up.

This is just a taster of what’s to come, so please keep visiting to learn more about how to wear the lastest looks.  I will be focussing on the little “micro trends” as they pop up, the must-have accessories, the hottest shoes and the best silhouettes.

‘Till then, get your sunnies on and prepare for the season ahead!
